Is the checkout.liquid upgrade still coming?

No. The deadlines have passed. If your store relied on checkout.liquid, additional scripts or Shopify Scripts and nobody rebuilt them, those customizations are already gone. These are the dates, from Shopify's own documentation:

What is Checkout Extensibility?

Checkout Extensibility is how Shopify checkout is customized now. Instead of editing one checkout.liquid file, changes are delivered as apps and settings that Shopify keeps working when it updates checkout. It has four parts:

  • Checkout UI extensions add content and fields to checkout, Thank you and Order status pages.
  • Shopify Functions run custom backend logic for discounts, delivery, payment and validation.
  • Branding through the checkout and accounts editor, plus the Checkout Branding API on Plus.
  • Pixels in Customer events handle tracking and analytics.

See Shopify's overview of apps in checkout.

Who are our Checkout Extensibility services for?

Plus stores that lost customizations

Your checkout.liquid changes, additional scripts or Shopify Scripts stopped working and something is missing: a discount, a shipping rule, a trust message, a tracking tag.

Stores that never finished the upgrade

You switched to the default checkout to meet a deadline and planned to rebuild later. We pick up the list and rebuild what still matters.

Non Plus stores

On Basic, Grow and Advanced you can customize the Thank you and Order status pages with apps, use the checkout editor and move tracking to pixels. We set that up properly.

What can you customize in Shopify checkout on each plan?

Standard checkout customization is available on the Basic plan or higher. Customizing the steps where buyers enter their details, and the Checkout Branding API, are Shopify Plus only (Shopify Help Center).

What we build on Checkout Extensibility

  • Checkout editor setup

Logo, colors, fonts, backgrounds and layout configured in the checkout and accounts editor, matched to your storefront.

  • Checkout UI extensions

Custom content and fields in checkout on Plus: delivery notes, gift messages, trust badges, upsells and B2B fields such as PO numbers.

  • Customer events pixels

Tracking moved from additional scripts and script tags to app pixels and custom pixels, with purchase events checked against real orders.

  • Checkout Branding API

Styling beyond the editor on Plus, such as corner radius, section styling and custom header and footer content.

  • Shopify Functions

Discount, delivery, payment and validation logic that replaces Shopify Scripts and checkout.liquid JavaScript rules.

  • Thank you and Order status blocks

Post purchase content on every plan: surveys, upsells, delivery details and support links, built as app blocks.

How do Shopify Scripts map to Shopify Functions?

Shopify Scripts came in three types: line item, shipping and payment scripts (Shopify Help Center). Each one has a Shopify Function API that replaces it (Function APIs). Shopify's Scripts customizations report, under Apps, Script Editor, lists the Scripts that were active before the deprecation and can be exported as a CSV (Shopify Help Center).

Shopify ScriptWhat it didShopify Function replacement
Line item scriptsPercentage and fixed discounts, BOGO, tiered and volume price breaks, discounts by product tag.Discount Function API: one function can discount cart lines, the order subtotal and shipping. Bundles use the Cart Transform Function API.
Shipping scriptsRename, hide or reorder shipping options, change shipping prices.Delivery Customization Function API to rename, sort and hide delivery options. Shipping price discounts use the Discount Function API.
Payment scriptsRename, hide or reorder payment gateways.Payment Customization Function API to rename, reorder and hide payment methods, set payment terms and add a review requirement.
Checkout rules in checkout.liquidJavaScript that blocked orders, such as quantity limits or address checks.Cart and Checkout Validation Function API, which runs on the server and cannot be bypassed in the browser.

Shopify says Functions execute in under 5 milliseconds (Shopify Help Center). Any plan can use App Store apps built on Functions; custom apps that contain Functions need Shopify Plus (Shopify dev docs).

How do you move tracking from additional scripts to Customer events?

Tracking that lived in the additional scripts box or in script tags now belongs in pixels, managed under Customer events in your Shopify admin. Pixels run on the online store, customer accounts pages and checkout (Shopify Help Center). Our approach:

  • App pixels first. Most ad and analytics platforms ship an app pixel, which Shopify recommends over custom code.
  • Custom pixels for the rest. Affiliate, survey and niche tags are rebuilt on standard events such as checkout_started, payment_info_submitted and checkout_completed (standard events).
  • No duplicate firing. We remove old theme and app tags so purchases are not counted twice.
  • Verified against orders. Test orders are matched in each platform before the old scripts are switched off.

Our Checkout Extensibility process

Five steps, the same for a single missing discount or a full checkout rebuild.

  1. Step 01

    1. Audit

We review the checkout customizations report under Settings, Checkout (Shopify changelog), the Scripts customizations report, your theme, apps and old checkout.liquid code.

  2. Step 02

    2. Map

Every customization gets a target: built in setting, App Store app, checkout UI extension, Shopify Function or pixel. Ones you no longer need are dropped.

  3. Step 03

    3. Build

We build extensions and Functions in a custom app or configure apps, then set up branding in a draft checkout configuration.

  4. Step 04

    4. Test

Test orders cover discounts, shipping, payment methods, markets, B2B buyers and tracking, on desktop and mobile.

  5. Step 05

    5. Publish

The draft configuration goes live, old scripts are deactivated and we watch orders and analytics in the first days.

How long does a Checkout Extensibility project take?

It depends on how many customizations you had and how many need custom code. Typical ranges:

ScopeTypical timeline
Audit and mapping3 to 5 business days
Branding, editor setup and pixel tracking1 to 2 weeks
Thank you and Order status pages with apps1 to 2 weeks
Custom checkout UI extensions2 to 4 weeks
Shopify Functions replacing Scripts2 to 6 weeks

Ranges are typical for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Work streams can run in parallel, and the audit sets your actual schedule.

Shopify Checkout Extensibility FAQ

Does checkout.liquid still work on Shopify?

No. checkout.liquid stopped working on the Information, Shipping and Payment pages on August 13, 2024, and was sunset on the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025 (Shopify dev docs). All checkout customization now runs on Checkout Extensibility.

Do Shopify Scripts still run?

No. Shopify Scripts was deprecated on June 30, 2026, and any Scripts still published were deactivated (Shopify Help Center). Editing and publishing had already stopped on April 15, 2026 (Shopify dev changelog). The replacement is Shopify Functions.

My checkout customizations disappeared. Can they be rebuilt?

Usually yes. Shopify's customizations reports list what was active, and most changes can be rebuilt with checkout UI extensions, Functions, branding or pixels. On non Plus plans, only the Thank you and Order status pages accept app customizations (Shopify Help Center).

Do I need Shopify Plus to customize checkout?

Only for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps and the Checkout Branding API. Every plan from Basic up gets the checkout editor and apps on the Thank you and Order status pages (Shopify Help Center). See our Shopify Plus upgrade service.

Can I edit my additional scripts?

No. The additional scripts box has been view only since August 28, 2025 (Shopify Help Center). Tracking moves to app pixels or custom pixels in Customer events, and page changes move to app blocks.

Can a non Plus store use Shopify Functions?

Yes, through public App Store apps that contain Functions. Custom apps with your own Functions need Shopify Plus (Shopify dev docs).

Will Checkout Extensibility break when Shopify updates checkout?

It is designed not to. Extensions, Functions and pixels plug into checkout through supported APIs instead of overriding its code, so Shopify can ship checkout updates without breaking them.

How long does a Checkout Extensibility project take?

Simple branding and tracking work typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. Rebuilding Scripts as Shopify Functions or building custom checkout UI extensions typically takes 2 to 6 weeks. These ranges are for planning, not a quote.
