WooCommerce to Shopify Migration

A WooCommerce to Shopify migration moves your products and variations, customers, orders, coupons, reviews and subscriptions from WooCommerce into Shopify, then 301 redirects every /product/, /product-category/ and /product-tag/ URL to its new Shopify address. Ecomzier maps variable products to Shopify variants, replaces extensions and tests everything before launch.

Who is a WooCommerce to Shopify migration for?

WooCommerce runs as a plugin inside WordPress, so you host and update WordPress, WooCommerce and every extension yourself. Shopify is hosted and updated for you. This page covers stores where WooCommerce is the main job. If your site is mostly blog content with a small shop, see our WordPress to Shopify migration page. These are the WooCommerce stores we migrate most often:

Stores with large variable catalogs

Hundreds or thousands of variable products, global attributes and per variation stock, images and prices that a CSV import alone will not restructure correctly.

Subscription businesses

Active WooCommerce Subscriptions with renewals you cannot afford to interrupt, where saved payment methods and renewal dates must carry over.

Stores built on extensions

Bookings, Memberships, Product Add-Ons, multi currency and tax plugins that each need a Shopify feature or app in their place.

Brands heading to Shopify Plus

Higher volume, several markets or wholesale needs. The same migration can land directly on Shopify Plus, with integrations planned from day one.

Can Shopify's Store Migration app move a WooCommerce store?

Yes, in part. Shopify's free, first party Store Migration app lists WooCommerce as a source and imports product and customer data, from a CSV file or, on supported platforms, by connecting your account. For a small catalog with simple products that can be enough. An agency earns its place when you also need orders, subscriptions, custom fields and SEO redirects:

DataStore Migration appEcomzier migration
ProductsYes. Shopify's WooCommerce guide notes that products with more than three options will not have their options imported (Shopify Help Center).Products, variations, images, attributes and SEO fields, with products over three variation attributes restructured before import.
CustomersYes, listed in the app description.Customers with addresses, tags and marketing consent.
Historical ordersNot listed in the app description.Imported through the Shopify API with line items, refunds, taxes, notes and dates.
ReviewsNot listed. Shopify's guide says WooCommerce reviews cannot be exported and points to a reviews app (Shopify Help Center).Read from the product reviews endpoint of the WooCommerce REST API and imported into the reviews app you choose.
SubscriptionsNot listed.Moved into a Shopify subscription app, with saved payment methods migrated where your gateway allows it.
CouponsNot listed.Recreated as Shopify discounts, rule by rule.
Custom fields and extension dataNot listed.Mapped to Shopify metafields and metaobjects.
URL redirectsNot listed.A one to one 301 redirect map for every product, category and tag URL.

What moves from WooCommerce to Shopify?

We export through the WooCommerce REST API (version wc/v3, with read only consumer keys) rather than relying on CSV files alone, so variations, order refunds, notes and custom meta come across intact. Here is how each WooCommerce data type lands in Shopify:

WooCommerce dataMoves?Where it lands in Shopify
Simple productsYesProducts with price, sale price, SKU, stock, weight, dimensions and images.
Variable products and variationsYes, remappedVariation attributes become Shopify options, and each variation becomes a variant. See the variable products table below.
Grouped and external productsRebuiltGrouped products become bundles or collections. External (affiliate) products keep their outbound link in a metafield and a theme button.
Virtual and downloadable productsYesImported as products that do not require shipping, with files delivered by a digital downloads app.
Global and custom attributesYesAttributes not used for variations become metafields that power storefront filters.
Product categories and tagsYes, remappedCategories become collections, including nested subcategories. Tags carry over as Shopify product tags.
CustomersYesNames, emails, billing and shipping addresses and marketing consent. Passwords cannot move, so customers sign in with a one time email code through new customer accounts.
Historical ordersYes, via APIShopify admin imports products and customers by CSV, and orders through migration apps or the API (Shopify Help Center). We include line items, refunds, taxes, shipping, notes and dates.
CouponsRecreatedPercentage, fixed cart and fixed product coupons become Shopify discounts with their minimums, exclusions and usage limits.
Product reviewsYesRatings, reviewer names, dates and text, matched to each product in your reviews app.
Shipping classes and zonesRebuiltRebuilt as Shopify shipping profiles, zones and rates, then checked against real orders.
Custom fields (post meta)Yes, mappedData stored by plugins or custom code is mapped to metafields or metaobjects so the theme can display it.

How WooCommerce variable products map to Shopify variants

This is the biggest catalog difference. In WooCommerce, a variable product uses attributes to build variations, each with its own price, stock and image. Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center). We plan the mapping product by product:

WooCommerce setupShopify equivalentHow we handle it
Attributes used for variations (size, color, material)Product optionsUp to three variation attributes become options. Each variation becomes a variant with its own SKU, price, stock, weight and image.
Attributes not used for variationsMetafieldsDescriptive attributes such as fabric or care move to metafields, so they still show on the page and in filters.
Variations set to "Any" attribute valueOne variant per combinationWooCommerce lets a variation match any value of an attribute (WooCommerce docs). Shopify needs every combination listed, so we expand these into explicit variants.
Four or more variation attributesRestructuredThe attributes that do not affect stock move to line item properties or metafields, or the product is split into linked products.
Product Add-Ons (text, checkboxes, file uploads, priced extras)Line item propertiesRebuilt with a product options app that saves each choice on the order as line item properties, including priced extras.

What happens to WooCommerce extensions and plugins?

Extensions are WordPress code, so they do not move. We rebuild the job each one did with a native Shopify feature, an app or custom code, and retire the ones Shopify makes unnecessary:

WooCommerce extension or pluginShopify replacementWhat to know
WooCommerce SubscriptionsShopify subscription app, such as the free Shopify Subscriptions appActive contracts and renewal dates are imported. Saved payment methods depend on your gateway, see the next table.
WooCommerce BookingsBooking or appointment appBookable services, resources and availability are rebuilt in the app. Upcoming bookings are moved or honored before the cutover.
WooCommerce MembershipsCustomer tags, segments and a membership appMembers are tagged on import, and gated content and member discounts are rebuilt in the app or theme.
Multi currency pluginsShopify MarketsMarkets handles local currencies, languages and domains. Full local currency features need Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center).
Tax pluginsShopify TaxShopify Tax automates tax calculation for stores in the United States, Canada, the UK and the EU. Tax overrides and exempt customers are rebuilt in Shopify.
Payment gateway pluginsShopify Payments or a supported third party providerThird party transaction fees apply on third party gateways, except PayPal and manual payments when Shopify Payments is active (Shopify Help Center).
Caching, security and backup pluginsNot neededShopify hosts the store, includes SSL and is certified PCI DSS Level 1 (Shopify security).

Can WooCommerce Subscriptions move without customers re entering cards?

Often, yes. It depends on the payment gateway that holds your saved cards. WooCommerce Subscriptions renews automatically through gateways that store payment tokens (WooCommerce docs). Shopify supports migrating saved payment methods from four gateways (Shopify developer docs):

Gateway holding your saved payment methodsCan they move to Shopify?Conditions
StripeYes, credit cardsOnly credit card payment methods migrate from Stripe.
BraintreeYes, credit cards and Apple PayPayPal and Google Pay methods stored in Braintree do not migrate.
PayPal ExpressYes, billing agreementsNeeds reference transactions approved for your account by PayPal.
Authorize.netYesCustomer profiles with stored payment methods migrate.
Any other gatewayNot on Shopify's listWe confirm during the audit. If tokens cannot move, customers update their payment details at their next renewal.

Migrated gateways connect to Shopify to bill existing contracts, while new subscriptions charge through Shopify Payments. Shopify recommends pausing billing in your old system during the move to avoid double charges, so we schedule the cutover between renewal runs.

How we keep your SEO when moving from WooCommerce to Shopify

Shopify uses fixed URL prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/), so nearly every WooCommerce URL changes. Rankings survive when each old URL points to the right new one:

  • A one to one redirect map. We crawl the live store and its XML sitemap, then 301 redirect every product, category, tag and page URL to its Shopify equivalent. No mass redirects to the homepage.
  • Metadata kept as is. SEO titles and meta descriptions from Yoast SEO, Rank Math or similar plugins move into Shopify's SEO fields, along with image alt text.
  • Sitemap resubmitted. Shopify generates /sitemap.xml automatically (Shopify Help Center). We submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools on launch day and watch for 404s afterward.

Default WooCommerce permalink bases (WooCommerce docs) and where they go:

WooCommerce URLShopify URLNotes
/product/blue-hoodie//products/blue-hoodieDefault product base. The handle stays the same where possible.
/shop/hoodies/blue-hoodie//products/blue-hoodieShop base with category. Every category path for a product redirects to the one product URL.
/product-category/hoodies//collections/hoodiesDefault category base. Subcategories such as /product-category/hoodies/zip/ map to their own collections.
/product-tag/organic//collections/organicDefault tag base. Tag archives that earn traffic become automated collections; the rest redirect to the closest collection.
/shop//collections/allThe WooCommerce shop page becomes the all products collection.
/my-account//accountCustomer account links and bookmarks keep working.

Shopify URL redirects are 301 redirects, can be imported by CSV, and only fire when the old path no longer loads a page. Stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center). Custom permalink bases are read from your settings and mapped the same way.

Our WooCommerce to Shopify migration process

Five steps, with your WooCommerce store taking orders until launch day.

  1. Step 01

    Audit and API export

We connect to the WooCommerce REST API with read only keys, list extensions, gateways and data volumes, and agree what moves and what is rebuilt.

  2. Step 02

    Catalog and variant mapping

Variable products, attributes and add ons are mapped to options, variants and metafields, product by product, and you approve the plan.

  3. Step 03

    Store build and extension rebuild

We build your theme and set up subscriptions, bookings, Markets, Shopify Tax and payments in place of the old extensions.

  4. Step 04

    Test migration and review

A full copy of products, customers, orders, reviews and subscriptions goes into the new store while WooCommerce stays live.

  5. Step 05

    Cutover and monitoring

Between renewal runs we pause WooCommerce billing, import new orders and contracts, load redirects, switch the domain and watch Search Console.

How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?

Most of the time goes into variant mapping, rebuilding extensions, design and testing, not into moving data. Typical ranges by store type:

Store typeTypical size and scopeTypical timeline
Small WooCommerce storeUnder 500 products, mostly simple products, a few extensions2 to 4 weeks
Mid size WooCommerce store500 to 5,000 products, variable products, reviews and order history4 to 8 weeks
Subscription storeActive WooCommerce Subscriptions with payment method migration6 to 10 weeks
Large or complex store5,000+ products, Bookings or Memberships, several currencies, ERP integration8 to 16 weeks

Typical ranges for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Your audit sets the actual schedule.

What affects the cost of a WooCommerce to Shopify migration?

We do not publish fixed prices, because two WooCommerce stores rarely need the same work. A free audit gives you a fixed quote. These factors move it:

FactorWhy it matters
Variable product structureProducts with "Any" variations, four or more attributes or add ons need restructuring before import.
Order historyYears of orders with refunds and notes take longer to import and check than products and customers.
Active subscriptionsContracts, renewal dates and payment methods need a planned cutover between renewal runs.
Extensions to replaceBookings, Memberships, Product Add-Ons and custom plugins each need an app, a native feature or custom code.
Custom fieldsPlugin and custom code data must be modeled as metafields and metaobjects.
Currencies, languages and taxMulti currency and translation plugins move to Shopify Markets, and tax rules to Shopify Tax.
Design scope and integrationsA custom theme, ERP, fulfillment and marketplace connections each add setup and testing.

WooCommerce vs Shopify: what changes after you migrate

WooCommerce gives you full control of the code and the server. The trade is control versus upkeep: on WooCommerce you run the platform; on Shopify you run the business.

WooCommerce to Shopify migration FAQ

Can I use Shopify's Store Migration app instead of an agency?

For a small store, possibly. Shopify's free Store Migration app imports WooCommerce product and customer data. It does not list orders, subscriptions, reviews, custom fields or redirects, so stores that need those usually bring in a migration partner.

Can WooCommerce Subscriptions move to Shopify without customers re entering cards?

Yes, if your saved payment methods sit with Stripe (credit cards), Braintree (credit cards and Apple Pay), PayPal Express (billing agreements) or Authorize.net (Shopify developer docs). With other gateways, customers usually update their payment details at their next renewal.

What happens to variable products with more than three attributes?

Shopify allows three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center). We keep the three attributes that drive stock as options and move the rest to metafields or line item properties, or split the product into linked products.

Can Shopify import my WooCommerce orders?

Yes, through migration apps or the Order API rather than the admin CSV import (Shopify Help Center). We pull orders from the WooCommerce REST API and import them with line items, refunds, taxes, notes and dates.

How do I keep SEO when moving from WooCommerce to Shopify?

Redirect every old URL one to one with 301s: /product/ to /products/, /product-category/ and /product-tag/ to /collections/. Keep titles, meta descriptions and alt text, then resubmit the sitemap. Shopify redirects can be imported by CSV (Shopify Help Center).

Do I have to use Shopify Payments?

No. You can use a supported third party provider, but third party transaction fees then apply, except on PayPal and manual payments when Shopify Payments is active (Shopify Help Center). Full local currency selling with Shopify Markets also needs Shopify Payments.

What replaces WooCommerce Bookings, Memberships and Product Add-Ons?

Shopify apps. Bookings move to a booking or appointment app, Memberships to customer tags plus a membership app, and Product Add-Ons to a product options app that records each choice on the order.

Will my customers need new passwords?

Passwords cannot be transferred, because WordPress stores them as one way hashes. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a one time code sent to their email, so no password is needed (Shopify Help Center).

How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?

Typical ranges run from 2 to 4 weeks for a small store to 8 to 16 weeks for a large, integrated one. Active subscriptions add planning time. Your audit sets the actual schedule.
