Squarespace to Shopify Migration

A Squarespace to Shopify migration moves your products and variants, customers, order history, blog posts, pages and images from Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1 into Shopify, then 301 redirects every old /p/ product URL, blog post and page to its new Shopify address. Ecomzier rebuilds what Squarespace cannot export, such as extra blogs, gift card balances and member areas, and tests everything before launch.

Who is a Squarespace to Shopify migration for?

Squarespace is a strong website builder, and many brands start their store there. The move to Shopify usually comes when the store becomes the main business and the catalog, content or selling channels outgrow what Squarespace Commerce was built for. These are the four situations we see most.

Catalogs hitting variant limits

Squarespace allows up to six options and 250 variant combinations per product (Squarespace Help). Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center), which suits large size and color ranges.

Content brands with more than one blog

Squarespace lets you run several blog pages, but its site export includes only one blog page and its posts (Squarespace Help). We move every blog, not just the first one.

Brands selling internationally or wholesale

Shopify Markets covers countries, currencies and up to 20 published languages, or 30 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center). B2B companies and catalogs give wholesale buyers their own prices (Shopify Help Center).

Download, service and subscription sellers

The Squarespace product export covers physical and service products only (Squarespace Help). Download products, gift cards and subscriptions need a planned move, and we map each one.

What moves from Squarespace to Shopify?

Squarespace exports products, customers and orders as CSV files and site content as a WordPress style XML file (Squarespace Help). None of these files imports into Shopify as is: Shopify's own guide has you rename columns and convert values before import (Shopify Help Center). Here is where each data type lands.

Squarespace dataMoves? How it lands in Shopify
Physical and service productsYes, remappedThe product CSV covers physical and service products, up to 10,000 of them (Squarespace Help). We map Product URL to the Shopify handle, options to variants, SKU, price and stock, and convert weights from pounds to grams as Shopify's guide requires (Shopify Help Center).
VariantsYes, restructured if neededSquarespace allows six options per product; Shopify allows three options and 2,048 variants (Shopify Help Center). Products with four to six options are restructured before import.
Product imagesYes, collectedThe product CSV leaves out featured images, variant images and image alt text (Squarespace Help), and Squarespace has no bulk image export (Squarespace Help). We collect every image from the live store, attach it to the right product and variant, and rewrite the alt text.
Additional product informationYes, rebuiltThe extra content section under each product is not in the CSV (Squarespace Help). We copy it into the product description or into metafields (Shopify Help Center) shown in a product page block.
Store pages, categories and tagsYes, remappedStore pages and categories, up to 1,000 categories in three levels on 7.1 (Squarespace Help), become Shopify collections and a matching navigation menu. Product tags move as Shopify tags.
CustomersYesThe customer CSV includes names, emails, order totals, last used shipping and billing addresses and tags (Squarespace Help). We convert it to Shopify's customer columns, including the email marketing consent field.
Historical ordersYes, via APISquarespace exports orders with line items, SKUs, variants, discounts, taxes, addresses and statuses (Squarespace Help). Shopify admin cannot import orders (Shopify Help Center), so we load them through the API and link each one to its customer.
Blog postsYes, via APIShopify needs a migration app or its Blog Article API for blog posts (Shopify Help Center). We move titles, bodies, authors, dates, excerpts, featured images, categories and tags into Shopify blogs.
Layout pagesYes, via APIText and image content from layout pages moves to Shopify pages (Shopify Help Center), rebuilt with theme sections so your team can edit them.
SEO fieldsYesSEO titles, SEO descriptions and URL slugs for products, pages and blog posts move into Shopify SEO fields and handles.
Existing URL mappingsYes, consolidatedRedirects you already set up in Squarespace URL mappings (Squarespace Help) are rebuilt as Shopify redirects that point straight to the final URL, so no redirect chains.

How Squarespace product types map to Shopify

Squarespace has four product types: physical, download, service and gift card, and physical and service products can also be sold as subscriptions (Squarespace Help). Shopify has no product type setting, so each one is rebuilt with the right Shopify feature:

Squarespace product typeShopify equivalentHow we handle it
Physical productProduct with shippingMoves from the product CSV with variants, SKUs, weights, prices and stock.
Service productProduct without shippingMoves from the product CSV with shipping turned off. Variants for packages or session lengths carry over (Squarespace Help). Booking is added with a scheduling app if you need it.
Download productShopify Digital Products appDownload products are not in the product CSV (Squarespace Help). We recreate them and attach the files with Shopify's free Digital Products app, which takes files up to 5 GB (Shopify Help Center).
Gift cardShopify gift card productSquarespace gift cards never expire and work only on the site that issued them (Squarespace Help). We create a Shopify gift card product, and outstanding balances are issued as Shopify gift cards through an app or the GiftCard API (Shopify Help Center).
Subscription (physical or service)Subscription appSubscription products are rebuilt with selling plans in Shopify Subscriptions (Shopify Help Center) or another subscription app. Moving active subscribers depends on your payment processor, so we confirm it in the audit.
Variants with four to six optionsUp to three optionsSquarespace allows six options and 250 variants (Squarespace Help); Shopify allows three options (Shopify Help Center). Descriptive options move to metafields or the product is split.

What does not move, and how we rebuild it

The Squarespace site export leaves out store pages, product blocks, index, portfolio, album and calendar pages, extra blog pages, audio and video blocks, style settings and custom CSS (Squarespace Help). We rebuild the job each piece did on Shopify.

Squarespace featureWhy it does not moveHow we rebuild it on Shopify
Template and designStyle settings and custom CSS are not exported (Squarespace Help), and Squarespace templates do not run on Shopify.A Shopify theme with sections and blocks your team edits in the theme editor, matched to your brand.
Second and later blog pagesThe XML export includes only one blog page (Squarespace Help). Each blog page becomes its own Shopify blog, moved post by post with images, tags and dates.
Index, portfolio, album and calendar pagesThese page types are excluded from the export (Squarespace Help).Rebuilt as Shopify pages with theme sections, or with an events app for calendar content.
Product reviewsShopify's guide states that reviews cannot be exported or migrated from Squarespace to Shopify (Shopify Help Center). We set up a Shopify review app and plan how to bring reviews across before launch.
Member areas and coursesMembers sign up for a pricing plan themselves, and member contacts cannot be created or imported manually (Squarespace Help).Gated content is rebuilt with Shopify customer accounts and a membership or course app, and members are invited to the new store.
Customer passwordsThe customer CSV has no password field (Squarespace Help). With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent by email, so no reset is needed.
Integrations and code injectionThird party integrations and code injected into Squarespace are tied to that platform. Each one is mapped to a native Shopify feature, an app from the Shopify App Store or theme code.

How we keep your SEO when moving from Squarespace to Shopify

Squarespace builds product URLs from the store page slug, while Shopify uses fixed prefixes such as /products/, /collections/, /blogs/ and /pages/. So nearly every indexed URL changes, and Shopify's guide warns that old Squarespace URLs will not redirect on their own (Shopify Help Center). Rankings hold when each old URL points to the right new one:

  • A full URL inventory. We crawl the store and its sitemap and list every product, store page, category, blog post and page URL, plus your existing URL mappings.
  • One to one 301 redirects. Each URL redirects to its exact Shopify equivalent. No mass redirects to the homepage.
  • Same slugs where possible. Product, post and page slugs are kept as Shopify handles, so only the prefix changes.
  • Metadata kept. SEO titles, SEO descriptions, headings, alt text and descriptions move unchanged.
  • Post launch monitoring. We submit the new sitemap and watch Google Search Console for 404s and indexing issues after launch.

Typical Squarespace URL patterns and where they go:

Squarespace URLShopify URLNotes
/shop/p/linen-tote/products/linen-toteProduct URL on version 7.1: store page slug, then /p/, then the product slug (Squarespace Help).
/shop/linen-tote/products/linen-toteProduct URL on version 7.0, without the /p/ (Squarespace Help).
/shop/collections/allThe store page. Stores with several store pages get one collection per page.
/shop?category=Bags/collections/bagsCategory filter URL (Squarespace Help). Shopify notes that redirects from URLs with query strings may not work as expected (Shopify Help Center), so we test each one that still earns traffic or links.
/blog/linen-care-guide/blogs/news/linen-care-guideBlog post with a title only URL format.
/blog/2023/5/27/linen-care-guide/blogs/news/linen-care-guideBlog post URL formats can include the year, month and day the post was created (Squarespace Help). The date is dropped on Shopify.
/blog?tag=care/blogs/news/tagged/careBlog tag filter (Squarespace Help), tested like other query string URLs.
/journal/studio-update/blogs/journal/studio-updateA second blog page becomes its own Shopify blog with the same handle.
/about/pages/aboutLayout pages become Shopify pages.

Shopify URL redirects can be imported by CSV and only fire when the old path returns a 404 on Shopify. Stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center). Store specific slugs, such as custom category URL slugs on 7.1, are read from your own crawl.

How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?

Data transfer is the quick part. Time goes into collecting images, restructuring variants, moving blogs, rebuilding pages and testing. Typical ranges:

Store typeTypical scopeTypical timeline
Small storeOne store page, under 500 products, one blog2 to 4 weeks
Mid size storeSeveral store pages and blogs, thousands of variants, order history4 to 8 weeks
Content or membership led storeLarge blog archive, member areas, subscriptions or download products6 to 10 weeks
Large or international storeCustom design, several markets or languages, integrations8 to 14 weeks

Typical ranges for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Your audit sets the actual schedule.

What affects the cost of a Squarespace to Shopify migration?

We do not publish fixed prices, because two Squarespace stores rarely need the same work. A free audit gives you a fixed quote. These are the factors that move it:

FactorWhy it matters
Catalog size and imagesSquarespace has no bulk image export, so every product and variant image is collected and matched.
VariantsProducts with four to six options must be restructured for Shopify's three options.
Product typesDownload products, gift card balances and subscriptions each need their own migration path.
Blogs and pagesOnly one blog page exports from Squarespace. Extra blogs and index, portfolio and gallery layouts are moved and rebuilt by hand or by API.
Member areas and coursesGated content and member access are rebuilt with apps and customer accounts.
Order historyYears of orders take longer to import and verify than products and customers.
Redirect volumeLarge blog archives and query string category URLs mean more redirects to map and test.
Design scopeAdapting a Shopify theme costs less than a fully custom design.
IntegrationsEmail, accounting, shipping and marketplace connections each need setup and testing.

Squarespace vs Shopify: what changes after you migrate

Both platforms are hosted, so there is no server to look after on either side. The difference is depth: Shopify is built around commerce, with more room for catalogs, channels and apps.

Squarespace to Shopify migration FAQ

Can I migrate from Squarespace to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes, if every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new Shopify URL and your SEO titles, descriptions, alt text and content stay the same. Old Squarespace URLs will not redirect on their own (Shopify Help Center), so we map every /p/ product URL, store page, blog post and page one to one and import the redirects by CSV (Shopify Help Center).

Does the Shopify Store Migration app support Squarespace?

No. Shopify's Store Migration app lists Square, WooCommerce, Etsy, Wix, Amazon, eBay, Clover and Lightspeed as sources, not Squarespace (Shopify App Store). Shopify's own Squarespace guide uses edited CSV files, third party apps or a Shopify Partner such as Ecomzier (Shopify Help Center).

What can I export from Squarespace myself?

Products as a CSV, covering physical and service products up to 10,000 (Squarespace Help), customers and orders as CSV files, and site content as an XML file that includes one blog page (Squarespace Help). The product CSV leaves out featured images, variant images, alt text and reviews, and images cannot be exported in bulk (Squarespace Help).

What happens to products with more than three options?

Squarespace allows up to six options per product (Squarespace Help), and Shopify allows three options and 2,048 variants (Shopify Help Center). We restructure those products before import, usually by moving descriptive options into metafields or splitting the product.

Will all my blog posts move?

Yes. The Squarespace export includes only one blog page (Squarespace Help), and Shopify needs an app or its Blog Article API to import posts (Shopify Help Center). We move every blog page and post with images, authors, dates and tags, and redirect each old post URL.

Will customers need new passwords after the migration?

Passwords cannot be transferred, and the Squarespace customer export has no password field (Squarespace Help). With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent to their email, so no password is needed (Shopify Help Center).

Can I keep my Squarespace order history?

Yes. Squarespace exports orders with line items, totals, discounts, taxes and addresses (Squarespace Help). Shopify admin cannot import orders by CSV (Shopify Help Center), so we load them through the API and link each order to its customer.

What happens to my gift cards?

Squarespace gift cards never expire and can only be used on the site that issued them (Squarespace Help). We list outstanding balances and issue them as Shopify gift cards through an app or the GiftCard API (Shopify Help Center), then let customers know before launch.

Can I keep my product reviews?

Shopify's own guide says reviews cannot be exported or migrated from Squarespace to Shopify (Shopify Help Center). We set up a Shopify review app during the build and agree with you how to bring reviews across before launch.

How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?

Typical ranges run from 2 to 4 weeks for a small store with one blog to 8 to 14 weeks for a large or international store with custom design and integrations. Your audit sets the actual schedule.
