What are Shopify SEO services?

Shopify SEO is search engine optimization built around how Shopify actually works. The platform gives every store a solid base: it adds canonical tags, generates sitemap.xml and robots.txt automatically, turns on SSL and ships themes with product schema (Shopify Help Center). That base is the same for every store, so it is not what makes you rank.

What separates stores in search is everything Shopify leaves to you: which URLs search engines spend their time on, how clearly your collections and products answer what shoppers type, how fast your theme and apps let pages load, and whether other sites have reasons to cite you. Our Shopify SEO services cover all of it, in the theme code, in your admin and in your content.

What our Shopify SEO services include

Six workstreams, prioritized by your audit. Most stores need all of them over time, but rarely all at once.

Technical SEO for Shopify

We consolidate duplicate /collections/x/products/y URLs onto the canonical /products/y, keep filter and sort parameters out of the crawl, manage crawl budget on large catalogs, and fix structured data for Product, Organization, BreadcrumbList and FAQ. We also improve Core Web Vitals, internal linking and image alt text.

On page SEO

Unique title tags and meta descriptions for every template, collection page copy that answers real buying questions, and product descriptions written for shoppers first. We map one primary keyword to each page so your own pages stop competing with each other.

Content strategy

A blog plan built from search demand: buying guides, comparisons, how to articles and care guides that answer questions your customers ask before they buy, each one linking to the collection or product it supports.

Migration SEO

Moving to Shopify or Shopify Plus changes most URLs. We crawl the old site, build a one to one redirect map and load it before launch. Shopify allows up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center).

AI search and GEO

Getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity: clear factual copy, schema that matches the page, consistent brand data across the web, and clean product data for Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts.

Off page SEO

Digital PR and link earning: data stories, expert commentary and resources other sites want to reference. No paid link schemes, which Google treats as spam (Google Search Central).

What does a Shopify SEO audit check?

Every engagement starts with an audit of your live store, your Search Console data and your theme code. These are the checks that matter most on Shopify:

AreaWhat we checkWhy it matters on Shopify
Duplicate product URLsWhether product cards and menus link to /collections/x/products/y or to the canonical /products/y, and which version Google indexes.Every product can load under each collection it belongs to. Canonical tags help, but linking to the canonical URL directly saves crawl and consolidates signals.
Filters and sortingHow many filter, sort, vendor and tag URLs are crawled, and whether any are indexed.Google warns that faceted navigation can cause overcrawling and slower discovery of new pages (Google Search Central).
Crawl budgetCrawl stats, "Discovered, currently not indexed" pages and parameter waste in Search Console.Matters most for catalogs with 10,000+ pages that change daily, or 1 million+ pages (Google Search Central).
Structured dataProduct, Organization, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage markup: validity, duplicates from apps, and whether it matches visible content.Themes and review apps often output overlapping or conflicting product schema.
Core Web VitalsLCP, INP and CLS from field data, plus app scripts, hero images and fonts.Google recommends LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 (Google Search Central).
Titles and meta descriptionsMissing, duplicate and truncated titles and descriptions across products, collections, pages and blog posts. Many themes add the store name to every title, which can push the keyword out of view.
Internal linkingMenu depth, orphan collections, breadcrumb links and links from blog posts to products.Collections are usually your strongest commercial pages, so they need links from across the store.
Image alt textMissing or generic alt text on product, collection and blog images.Alt text helps Google understand images and is read aloud by screen readers (Google Search Central).
Indexing and redirects404s, redirect chains, noindexed pages, thin pages in the sitemap and leftover URLs from past migrations.Shopify redirects only fire when the old URL no longer loads a page.
AI crawler accessrobots.txt rules for search and AI crawlers, and whether key facts are in plain HTML.AI assistants can only cite content they are allowed to fetch and can read.

Shopify SEO limits and how we handle them

Shopify trades some control for reliability. None of these limits stop a store from ranking, but each one needs a deliberate workaround.

Shopify limitWhat it meansHow we handle it
Fixed URL prefixesProducts live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and posts under /blogs/. Only the handle after the prefix can be edited. We write short, descriptive handles and put the keyword in the handle, not the folder. Old URLs from other platforms are redirected one to one.
Collection aware product URLsThe same product loads at /products/y and at /collections/x/products/y.We update the theme so product links point to /products/y and confirm canonical tags point there too.
robots.txtShopify generates a default robots.txt. Changes require a robots.txt.liquid template, which Shopify Support does not help with (Shopify Help Center). We keep Shopify's defaults and add only tested rules, for example for app generated or parameter URLs, using Liquid so Shopify can keep updating the file.
sitemap.xmlThe sitemap is generated automatically and lists products, collections, pages and blog posts (Shopify Help Center). It cannot be edited directly. We keep thin or utility pages out with the seo.hidden metafield, which removes them from the sitemap and search engines (Shopify Help Center), then submit the sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
URL redirectsRedirects are 301s, but they only work when the old URL returns a 404.We test every redirect after loading it and fix chains so each old URL goes straight to its final page.
Apps and scriptsEvery app can add JavaScript to every page.We measure each app's cost to Core Web Vitals and remove, defer or replace the heaviest ones with our site speed team.

Shopify SEO services FAQ

What do Shopify SEO services include?

Technical SEO (duplicate URLs, filters, crawl budget, structured data, Core Web Vitals, internal links, alt text), on page SEO for titles, meta descriptions, collection and product copy, content strategy, migration redirects, AI search visibility and link earning. The audit decides the order.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes. Shopify adds canonical tags, generates sitemap.xml and robots.txt, enables SSL and includes product schema in themes (Shopify Help Center). The work is in what it leaves open: duplicate collection URLs, filter parameters, app scripts, thin collection pages and weak product copy.

Can you guarantee first page rankings?

No, and nobody honestly can. Google itself says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking (Google Search Central). We commit to the work, the roadmap and transparent reporting on rankings, clicks and organic revenue.

How long does Shopify SEO take to show results?

Technical fixes are picked up as Google recrawls the affected pages, which can happen within weeks on an active store. Content and links build over months. Your audit sets realistic milestones for your store and market.

Can I remove /products/ or /collections/ from Shopify URLs?

No. Shopify uses fixed prefixes for products, collections, pages and blogs. You can edit the handle after the prefix, and we redirect old URLs when a handle changes. The prefixes do not stop Shopify stores from ranking.

Should filtered collection pages be indexed?

Usually not. Filter and sort combinations multiply into thousands of near duplicate URLs, and Google recommends keeping them out of the crawl (Google Search Central). When a filter has real search demand, such as a color or material, we build it as its own collection with unique copy.

Does FAQ schema still help a Shopify store?

Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well known government and health sites (Google Search Central). We still add FAQPage markup where a visible FAQ exists, because it states questions and answers clearly for search engines and AI assistants, but we never promise rich results from it.

How do you optimize a Shopify store for ChatGPT and AI search?

By making facts easy to find and quote: clear HTML copy, schema that matches the page, consistent brand data, open crawler access and complete product data for Shopify Catalog. Google confirms no special AI markup is required (Google Search Central).

Will migrating to Shopify hurt my SEO?

Not if every old URL is redirected to its closest new page, metadata and content move intact, and the sitemap is resubmitted on launch day. We handle that mapping as part of our Shopify migration services and monitor Search Console after launch.

Do you buy backlinks?

No. Buying links to manipulate rankings breaks Google's spam policies (Google Search Central). We earn links through digital PR, original data, expert commentary and resources other sites choose to cite.
