WordPress to Shopify Migration

A WordPress to Shopify migration moves your products, customers, orders, blog posts, pages and images from WordPress or WooCommerce into Shopify, then maps every old URL to its new address with 301 redirects so rankings and backlinks keep working. Ecomzier plans the move, rebuilds plugin features and tests everything before launch.

Who is a WordPress to Shopify migration for?

WordPress is a content management system that runs about 40% of all websites (W3Techs). Most WordPress sites that sell online use the free WooCommerce plugin. So a WordPress migration is one of two jobs, often both: moving a WooCommerce store, or moving a content site (blog and pages) onto Shopify.

WooCommerce stores tired of upkeep

You spend more time on hosting, plugin updates, security patches and conflicts than on selling. Shopify hosts and updates the platform for you.

Content only WordPress sites

Your site is a blog and pages with no store yet. We move the content into Shopify, keep its URLs working, and you launch products on the same domain.

Publishers selling through a separate cart

Content lives on WordPress and checkout on another tool. Migrating puts both on one Shopify domain, so traffic and authority stop being split.

Growing brands heading to Shopify Plus

You need B2B, several markets or higher volume. The same migration can land directly on Shopify Plus, with integrations planned from day one.

What moves from WordPress to Shopify?

Everything that is data moves. Here is how each type lands in Shopify, including where the two platforms differ.

DataMoves?How it moves
Products and variantsYesSimple and variable products move with prices, SKUs, stock and weights. Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center), so products with four or more attributes are restructured before import.
Categories and tagsYes, remappedProduct categories become Shopify collections (manual, or automated by tag). Product tags carry over as tags you can filter and build collections on.
Images and alt textYesImages are uploaded to Shopify with their alt text, and image links inside your content point to the new files.
CustomersYesNames, emails, addresses, tags and marketing consent move. Passwords cannot move, because WordPress stores them as one way hashes. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent by email, so no password is needed.
Historical ordersYes, via APIShopify admin imports products and customers by CSV but not orders (Shopify Help Center). We import them through the Order API with line items, totals, taxes and dates, so order history stays intact.
Blog postsYesPosts move into Shopify blogs with title, body, author, publish date, featured image, excerpt and tags. WordPress categories become blogs or tags.
PagesYesAbout, FAQ, policy and landing pages move as Shopify pages. Page builder layouts are rebuilt as sections.
Post categories and tagsYes, remappedPost categories and tags become Shopify blog tags, so readers can still browse by topic. A large category can become its own Shopify blog instead.
AuthorsYesEach post keeps its author name. Shopify has no author archive pages, so old author archive URLs are redirected to the blog.
Media libraryYesImages and files used in posts and pages are uploaded to Shopify Files, and every link inside your content is rewritten to the new file address.
Product reviewsYesRatings, authors, dates and text are imported into the Shopify review app you choose and matched to each product.
CouponsRecreatedActive coupons are recreated as Shopify discounts, checking each rule (minimums, exclusions, usage limits) one by one.
SubscriptionsCase by caseActive WooCommerce Subscriptions move into a Shopify subscription app. Whether saved payment methods can transfer depends on your payment gateway, so we confirm it during the audit.
SEO titles and descriptionsYesTitles and meta descriptions from Yoast SEO, Rank Math or similar plugins move into the SEO fields of each Shopify product, collection, page and post.
URLs and redirectsYes, mappedEvery old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new Shopify URL. See the redirect mapping table below.

What does not move, and how we rebuild it

Anything that is WordPress code rather than data stays behind: the theme, plugins and PHP customizations. We rebuild the job each one did, not the code, which is also the moment to drop the plugins Shopify makes unnecessary.

WordPress featureWhy it does not moveHow we rebuild it on Shopify
Theme and designWordPress themes are PHP templates. Shopify themes use Liquid. We build or adapt a Shopify theme with sections and blocks your team edits in the theme editor, matched to your brand.
PluginsPlugins run on your WordPress server and cannot be installed on Shopify. Each plugin is mapped to a native Shopify feature, a Shopify app or custom code. Caching, SSL and server security plugins are simply retired, because Shopify hosts the store.
Page builders (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery)Builder layouts are stored as builder specific markup and shortcodes that only the builder can render.Key layouts are rebuilt as reusable Shopify sections, so marketing can create new pages without a builder plugin.
Custom post types and custom fieldsShopify has no custom post types, and ACF style fields have no direct import.Modeled as Shopify metaobjects and metafields (for example size guides, lookbooks, ingredients or team members) and displayed by the theme.
ShortcodesShortcodes only render inside WordPress. Moved as is, they show up as raw bracketed text.We scan all content for shortcodes and replace each one with a section, an app block or clean HTML before import.
Forms (Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, WPForms)Form plugins and their stored entries live in your WordPress database.Rebuilt with the Shopify contact form or a forms app, with the same fields and notifications. Past entries are exported to CSV for your records.

How we keep your SEO when moving from WordPress to Shopify

Shopify uses fixed URL prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/), so almost every WordPress URL changes. Rankings survive when each old URL points to the right new one. Our SEO checklist:

  • A one to one redirect map. We crawl the live site and XML sitemap, then 301 redirect every product, category, post and page URL to its Shopify equivalent. No mass redirects to the homepage.
  • Metadata and content kept as is. SEO titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text and body copy move unchanged.
  • Internal links rewritten. Links inside posts and pages point straight to the new URLs, not through redirects.
  • Sitemap resubmitted. Shopify generates /sitemap.xml automatically (Shopify Help Center). We submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools on launch day.
  • Post launch monitoring. We watch Search Console for 404s and indexing issues after launch and fix any missed redirects.

Typical WordPress and WooCommerce URL patterns and where they go:

WordPress URLShopify URLNotes
/product/blue-hoodie//products/blue-hoodieWooCommerce default product base (WooCommerce docs).
/shop/hoodies/blue-hoodie//products/blue-hoodieShop base with category. Every category path for a product redirects to the one product URL.
/product-category/hoodies//collections/hoodiesCategories become collections. Subcategories map to their own collections.
/product-tag/organic//collections/organicTag archives that earn traffic become automated collections; the rest redirect to the closest collection.
/2024/05/03/post-name//blogs/news/post-nameDay and name permalinks (WordPress docs). Post name and month and name structures map the same way.
/category/guides//blogs/news/tagged/guidesPost categories become blog tags, or a separate blog when the category is large.
/tag/how-to//blogs/news/tagged/how-toPost tag archives map to the matching Shopify blog tag page.
/author/jane//blogs/newsShopify has no author archives, so these point to the blog.
/about-us//pages/about-usWordPress pages become Shopify pages with the same handle.
/feed//blogs/news.atomKeeps RSS readers and syndication working.

Shopify URL redirects are 301 redirects, can be imported by CSV, and only fire when the old path no longer loads a page. Stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center). The default Shopify blog is called News; it can be renamed before launch.

Our WordPress to Shopify migration process

Five steps, with your WordPress site live until launch day.

  1. Step 01

    Audit and URL inventory

We crawl every URL, list your plugins, integrations and data volumes, and agree what moves and what gets rebuilt. You receive a written migration plan.

  2. Step 02

    Store build and feature rebuild

We build your Shopify theme, recreate page builder layouts as sections and choose an app or custom code for each plugin worth keeping.

  3. Step 03

    Test migration and review

A full copy of your products, customers, orders and content goes into the new store. Your team checks it while WordPress stays live.

  4. Step 04

    Redirects and SEO setup

The redirect map, metadata, alt text and internal links are loaded and checked against the crawl, URL by URL.

  5. Step 05

    Launch and monitoring

We move orders and customers created since the test run, connect your domain, submit the sitemap and monitor Search Console after launch.

How long does a WordPress to Shopify migration take?

Most of the time goes into design, rebuilding plugin features and testing, not into moving data. Typical ranges by site type:

Site typeTypical sizeTypical timeline
Content only WordPress siteBlog and pages, no store1 to 3 weeks
Small WooCommerce storeUnder 500 products, a few plugins2 to 4 weeks
Mid size WooCommerce store500 to 5,000 products, subscriptions or custom fields4 to 8 weeks
Large or complex store5,000+ products, B2B, several markets or ERP integration8 to 16 weeks

Typical ranges for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Your audit sets the actual schedule.

What affects the cost of a WordPress to Shopify migration?

We do not publish fixed prices, because two WordPress sites rarely need the same work. A free audit gives you a fixed quote. These factors move it:

FactorWhy it matters
Catalog size and variant structureMore products mean more checking. Products with four or more attributes need restructuring for Shopify.
Order historyImporting years of orders takes longer than products and customers, and some stores only need recent history.
Number of pluginsEach plugin that matters is replaced by a Shopify feature, an app or custom code.
Page builder contentPages built in Elementor, Divi or WPBakery need their layouts rebuilt as Shopify sections.
Custom post types and fieldsStructured content must be modeled as metaobjects and metafields before import.
Design scopeAdapting a Shopify theme costs less than a fully custom design.
IntegrationsERP, CRM, marketplace and fulfillment connections each need setup and testing.
Languages and currenciesMultilingual sites (WPML, Polylang) and several currencies are rebuilt with Shopify Markets and translations.

WordPress (WooCommerce) vs Shopify: what changes after you migrate

WordPress is excellent for content. The trade is control versus upkeep: on WooCommerce you run the platform; on Shopify you run the business.

AreaWordPress with WooCommerceShopify
HostingYou choose, pay for and maintain hosting, PHP and database versions.Hosted by Shopify and included in every plan.
UpdatesWordPress core, theme and each plugin update separately and can conflict.Platform updates are applied by Shopify. Apps update independently of your theme.
Security and paymentsSSL, firewall and plugin vulnerabilities are your responsibility.SSL included, and Shopify is certified PCI DSS Level 1 (Shopify security).
VariantsVariable products can use many attributes.Up to three options and 2,048 variants per product.
Content and bloggingBest in class: custom post types, taxonomies and page builders.Built in blog and pages, with metaobjects for structured content.
Order importNot applicable.Orders arrive through migration apps or the API, not admin CSV.

WordPress to Shopify migration FAQ

Can I migrate from WordPress to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes, if every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new Shopify URL and your titles, meta descriptions, alt text and content stay the same. Shopify redirects are 301s and can be bulk imported (Shopify Help Center). We map URLs one to one, resubmit the sitemap and monitor Search Console after launch.

Do I need WooCommerce to migrate from WordPress to Shopify?

No. If WordPress only runs your blog and pages, we move that content into Shopify pages and blogs and you add products in Shopify. If you sell with WooCommerce, we move products, customers, orders and reviews as well.

Can Shopify import my WooCommerce orders?

Not through the admin. Shopify CSV import covers products and customers; historical orders need a migration app or the Order API (Shopify Help Center). We import orders with line items, totals, taxes and dates so order history stays complete.

Will my customers need new passwords after the migration?

Passwords cannot be transferred, because WordPress stores them as one way hashes. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent to their email, so no password is needed (Shopify Help Center).

What happens to my WordPress plugins?

Plugins do not move. We list every active plugin during the audit and replace the ones that matter with a native Shopify feature, an app or custom code. Hosting, caching and SSL plugins are no longer needed because Shopify runs the platform.

Can I keep my WordPress blog when I move to Shopify?

Yes. We migrate posts with their images, authors, dates and tags into the Shopify blog, and redirect each old post URL. Keeping content and products on one domain is usually better for SEO than running the blog separately.

What if my WooCommerce products have more than three attributes?

Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center). We restructure products with more attributes, usually by moving descriptive attributes into metafields or splitting a product into linked products, before import.

How long does a WordPress to Shopify migration take?

Typical ranges run from 1 to 3 weeks for a content only site to 8 to 16 weeks for a large, integrated store. Most WooCommerce stores fall in between. Your audit sets the actual schedule.

Will I keep my domain name and email?

Yes. You keep your domain and point it to Shopify at launch. We change only the DNS records Shopify needs, so email hosted on your domain keeps working.

Can I move from WordPress straight to Shopify Plus?

Yes. The process is the same, and Shopify Plus adds features such as B2B and a higher redirect limit of 20,000,000 URLs, which matters for very large WordPress sites.
