PrestaShop to Shopify Migration

A PrestaShop to Shopify migration moves your products and combinations, customers, orders, reviews, CMS pages and translations from PrestaShop 1.6, 1.7, 8 or 9 into Shopify, then 301 redirects every old .html URL to its new Shopify address. Ecomzier maps each module to a Shopify feature or app and tests everything before launch.

Who is a PrestaShop to Shopify migration for?

PrestaShop is open source software that you host yourself: you look after the server, PHP version, theme, modules and every upgrade. Merchants usually move to Shopify when the next upgrade, a security patch or a module conflict costs more than the platform is worth to them. These are the four situations we see most.

Stores still on PrestaShop 1.6

Official support for 1.6 ended on June 30, 2019, and patches now come from volunteers (PrestaShop). A 1.6 theme does not work on 1.7 or later, so even upgrading means rebuilding the storefront.

Stores facing the move to PrestaShop 9

PrestaShop 9 runs on Symfony 6.4 and needs PHP 8.1 or newer (PrestaShop). Every module and override has to be checked again. Many teams compare that project with a move to Shopify.

Multilanguage and multistore sellers

You run several languages, currencies or shops from one back office. Shopify Markets covers countries, currencies and up to 20 published languages, or 30 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center).

B2B stores built on customer groups

Wholesale prices live in customer groups and specific prices. On Shopify they become B2B companies and catalogs with their own prices, volume pricing and quantity rules (Shopify Help Center).

What moves from PrestaShop to Shopify?

PrestaShop and Shopify model a catalog differently, so most of the work is mapping, not copying. Here is where each PrestaShop data type lands in Shopify.

PrestaShop dataMoves? How it lands in Shopify
Products and combinationsYes, remappedEach attribute group (size, color, material) becomes a Shopify option and each combination becomes a variant with its own reference (SKU), EAN13 barcode, price impact, weight, stock and image. Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center), so products with four or more attribute groups are restructured before import.
FeaturesYes, as metafieldsFeatures such as Composition: Cotton describe a product but are not choices a shopper makes. They become product metafields (Shopify Help Center) and show in a specifications block on the product page.
CategoriesYes, remappedThe PrestaShop category tree becomes Shopify collections. Products sit in every collection their associated categories pointed to, and the tree is rebuilt as your navigation menu.
Brands and suppliersYesBrands become the Shopify vendor field plus a brand collection. Supplier names and supplier references move to metafields for purchasing.
ImagesYesProduct, combination, category and CMS images are uploaded to Shopify. The image legend becomes the alt text.
Customers and addressesYesNames, emails, addresses, newsletter and opt in status move. Passwords cannot move, because PrestaShop stores them as one way hashes. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent by email instead.
Customer groups and specific pricesRebuiltGroups become customer tags. Group discounts and specific prices for wholesale buyers move to Shopify B2B companies and catalogs (Shopify Help Center).
Historical ordersYes, via APIShopify admin has no order import (Shopify Help Center). We load orders through the API with line items, combinations, totals, taxes, carriers and dates, and map each PrestaShop order status to a Shopify payment and fulfillment status.
Product reviews (productcomments)YesThe native productcomments module stores reviews and grades in tables in your own database (PrestaShop on GitHub). We export ratings, titles, text, authors and dates and import them into the Shopify review app you choose.
CMS pagesYesCMS pages move as Shopify pages. CMS categories become menus or a parent page with links.
TranslationsYesProduct, category and CMS text in each language moves into Shopify translations, served on language subfolders such as /fr and /de (Shopify Help Center).
Cart rules and catalog price rulesRecreatedActive vouchers become discount codes and catalog price rules become automatic discounts or sale prices, checked condition by condition.
SEO fieldsYesMeta title, meta description and the friendly URL of each product, category, brand and CMS page move into Shopify SEO fields and handles.

What does not move, and how we rebuild it

Anything that is PrestaShop code stays behind. We rebuild the job each piece did, which is also the moment to retire modules that only existed to patch the platform.

PrestaShop featureWhy it does not moveHow we rebuild it on Shopify
ThemePrestaShop themes use Smarty templates; Shopify themes use Liquid. Even 1.6 themes do not carry over to PrestaShop 1.7 (PrestaShop docs).A Shopify theme with sections and blocks your team edits in the theme editor, matched to your brand.
ModulesModules are PHP code that hooks into PrestaShop on your server. Each active module is mapped to a native Shopify feature, an app from the Shopify App Store or custom code. Cache, security and backup modules are retired, because Shopify hosts the store.
Overrides and core editsOverrides change PrestaShop classes and controllers directly and have no Shopify equivalent. We document what each override changes and rebuild the behavior with Shopify Functions, an app or theme code.
Payment and carrier modulesGateways and carriers are installed as PrestaShop modules.Payments move to Shopify Payments or your provider app where it supports your country. Carriers and shipping rules move to Shopify shipping profiles or a shipping app.
MultistoreOne PrestaShop install can run several shops that share a back office.Shops that differ by country or language become Shopify Markets in one store. Shops that differ by brand or catalog become separate Shopify stores.
Product customization fieldsText and file customization fields are stored by PrestaShop with the cart.Rebuilt as line item properties through the theme or a product options app, so the details still reach the order.

How we keep your SEO when moving from PrestaShop to Shopify

PrestaShop friendly URLs carry a numeric ID and usually end in .html, while Shopify uses fixed prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/. So every indexed URL changes. Rankings hold when each old URL points to the right new one:

  • A full URL inventory. We crawl the store and its sitemap and pull every product, category, brand and CMS URL in every language from the database, including combination URLs.
  • One to one 301 redirects. Each URL redirects to its exact Shopify equivalent. No mass redirects to the homepage.
  • Clean handles. The numeric ID and EAN13 are dropped, so /7-printed-chiffon-dress.html becomes /products/printed-chiffon-dress.
  • Metadata kept. Meta titles, meta descriptions, headings, alt text and descriptions move unchanged in every language.
  • Post launch monitoring. We submit the new sitemap and watch Google Search Console for 404s and indexing issues after launch.

Typical PrestaShop URL patterns and where they go:

PrestaShop URLShopify URLNotes
/7-printed-chiffon-dress.html/products/printed-chiffon-dressProduct URL without a category in the path: ID, then the friendly URL.
/summer-dresses/7-printed-chiffon-dress.html/products/printed-chiffon-dressDefault product route with the category in the path (PrestaShop docs). Every category path for one product redirects to the same URL.
/summer-dresses/7-printed-chiffon-dress-8412345678901.html/products/printed-chiffon-dressSame route with the EAN13 barcode appended.
/10-16-printed-chiffon-dress.html/products/printed-chiffon-dressCombination URL in PrestaShop 1.7 and later; its canonical is already the parent product (PrestaShop specs).
/3-clothes/collections/clothesCategory route: ID, then the friendly URL.
/brand/2-graphic-corner/collections/graphic-cornerBrand pages become brand collections.
/content/4-about-us/pages/about-usCMS pages become Shopify pages.
/fr/7-robe-imprimee.html/fr/products/printed-chiffon-dressEach language prefix maps to the matching Shopify language subfolder.
/index.php?id_product=7&controller=product/products/printed-chiffon-dressURLs from before friendly URLs were turned on. Shopify notes that redirects from URLs with query strings may not work as expected (Shopify Help Center), so we test each one that still earns traffic or links.

Shopify URL redirects are 301 redirects, can be imported by CSV, and only fire when the old path returns a 404 on Shopify. Stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center). Store specific patterns, for example from URL rewriting modules, are read from your own crawl.

Our PrestaShop to Shopify migration process

Five steps, with your PrestaShop store taking orders until launch day.

  1. Step 01

    Audit and URL inventory

We note your PrestaShop version and PHP setup, list active modules and overrides, count products, combinations, languages and shops, and crawl every URL. You receive a written migration plan.

  2. Step 02

    Data mapping

Attribute groups are mapped to options, features to metafields, customer groups to tags or B2B catalogs, and order statuses to Shopify statuses, signed off with you before any import.

  3. Step 03

    Store build and test migration

We build the Shopify theme, choose an app or custom code for each module worth keeping, and run a full test import while PrestaShop stays live.

  4. Step 04

    Redirects and SEO setup

The redirect map is loaded and every old URL, in every language, is checked against the crawl.

  5. Step 05

    Launch and monitoring

We move orders and customers created since the test run, connect your domain, submit the sitemap and monitor Search Console after launch.

How long does a PrestaShop to Shopify migration take?

Data transfer is the quick part. Time goes into mapping combinations and features, replacing modules, design and testing. Typical ranges:

Store typeTypical scopeTypical timeline
Small storeOne language, under 1,000 products, a few modules2 to 4 weeks
Mid size storeSeveral languages or currencies, 1,000 to 10,000 products, reviews and order history4 to 8 weeks
Multistore or B2BSeveral shops, customer group pricing, many combinations8 to 14 weeks
Large or custom storeHeavy overrides, custom modules, ERP or marketplace integrations12 to 20 weeks

Typical ranges for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Your audit sets the actual schedule.

What affects the cost of a PrestaShop to Shopify migration?

We do not publish fixed prices, because two PrestaShop stores rarely need the same work. A free audit gives you a fixed quote. These are the factors that move it:

FactorWhy it matters
PrestaShop versionOlder 1.6 databases often need more cleanup, and custom changes are less documented.
CombinationsProducts with four or more attribute groups, or more than 2,048 combinations, must be restructured for Shopify.
Features and custom fieldsEach feature becomes a metafield definition that the theme then displays.
Languages and shopsEvery extra language means more translations to import and redirects to map. Multistore setups need a decision per shop.
Modules and overridesEach module or override that matters is replaced by a Shopify feature, an app or custom code.
Customer groups and B2B pricingGroup discounts and specific prices are rebuilt as B2B catalogs and checked buyer by buyer.
Order history and reviewsYears of orders and reviews take longer to import and verify than products and customers.
Design scopeAdapting a Shopify theme costs less than a fully custom design.
IntegrationsERP, marketplace, payment and carrier connections each need setup and testing.

PrestaShop to Shopify migration FAQ

Can I migrate from PrestaShop to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes, if every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new Shopify URL and your meta titles, descriptions, alt text and content stay the same. Shopify redirects are 301s and can be imported by CSV (Shopify Help Center). We map product, category, brand, CMS and combination URLs in every language one to one.

Does the Shopify Store Migration app support PrestaShop?

No. Shopify's own Store Migration app lists Square, WooCommerce, Etsy, Wix, Amazon, eBay, Clover and Lightspeed as sources, not PrestaShop (Shopify App Store). PrestaShop data moves through a third party migration app, the Shopify API or a migration partner such as Ecomzier.

What happens to my PrestaShop combinations?

Attribute groups become Shopify options and combinations become variants, each with its own SKU, barcode, price, stock and image. Shopify allows three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center), so we restructure products that go beyond that, usually by moving descriptive attributes into metafields or splitting the product.

Can I keep my PrestaShop product reviews?

Yes. The native productcomments module saves reviews in your own PrestaShop database (PrestaShop on GitHub), so we export ratings, titles, text, authors and dates and import them into the Shopify review app you choose, matched to each product.

Will customers need new passwords after the migration?

Passwords cannot be transferred, because PrestaShop stores them as one way hashes. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a six digit code sent to their email, so no password is needed (Shopify Help Center).

Can Shopify import my PrestaShop orders?

Not through the admin. Shopify imports products and customers by CSV, but historical orders need a migration app or the API (Shopify Help Center). We import them with line items, totals, taxes and dates, and map PrestaShop order statuses to Shopify statuses.

I run a multilanguage or multistore PrestaShop. Can Shopify handle it?

Yes. Languages and countries move to Shopify Markets, with up to 20 published languages, or 30 on Shopify Plus, each on its own subfolder such as /fr (Shopify Help Center). Shops that sell different brands or catalogs usually become separate Shopify stores.

What replaces my PrestaShop modules?

Modules do not move. We list every active module and override in the audit and replace the ones that matter with a native Shopify feature, an app or custom code. Cache, security and backup modules are no longer needed because Shopify runs the platform.

I am still on PrestaShop 1.6. Should I upgrade before migrating?

No. We migrate directly from 1.6, 1.7, 8 or 9, so there is no need to upgrade first. Official support for 1.6 ended in 2019 (PrestaShop), which is why many 1.6 stores move straight to Shopify instead.

How long does a PrestaShop to Shopify migration take?

Typical ranges run from 2 to 4 weeks for a small single language store to 12 to 20 weeks for a large store with custom modules and integrations. Your audit sets the actual schedule.
