Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus Migration

A Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus migration moves your B2C Commerce catalog, price books, inventory, customers, orders and content into Shopify Plus. Ecomzier maps master products and variants, rebuilds cartridges as apps and Shopify Functions, turns sites and locales into markets, and 301 redirects every SFCC URL, with a delta migration at cutover.

Who is a Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus migration for?

Salesforce B2C Commerce, still widely called SFCC or Demandware, is a powerful enterprise platform. It also ties most storefront change to cartridge development, specialist developers and Business Manager know how. Shopify Plus is a hosted platform built for high volume, B2B and international selling, where merchandisers change the storefront themselves. These are the SFCC brands we migrate most often:

SFRA and SiteGenesis storefronts

Brands whose storefront is a stack of cartridges, where a new landing page, a checkout tweak or a promotion change waits for a developer and a code deployment.

Global brands running several sites

One Business Manager realm with a site per brand or country, each with its own storefront catalog, locales, price books and inventory list to keep in sync.

Headless teams on Composable Storefront

PWA Kit storefronts on Managed Runtime that call the B2C Commerce API. The front end can move to a Shopify theme or to Hydrogen, while the commerce back end moves to Shopify Plus.

DTC brands adding wholesale

B2C Commerce is built for consumer selling, and Salesforce sells B2B Commerce as a separate product. Shopify Plus runs B2B and DTC from one store and one catalog.

What moves from Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus?

All of your data moves. Business Manager imports and exports XML files built on published schemas such as catalog.xsd, pricebook.xsd, customer.xsd and order.xsd (Salesforce Trailhead), and the rest comes through the APIs. Here is how each data type lands in Shopify Plus:

SFCC dataMoves? How it lands in Shopify Plus
Products and imagesYesNames, descriptions, IDs and SKUs, images and alt text move from the master catalog. Master products and variants are remapped, see the next table.
Storefront catalog categoriesYes, remappedCategories become collections, manual or rule based, and the category tree becomes your navigation menus.
Price booksYes, remappedList and sale prices become compare at price and price. Currency price books become market prices, and volume price tables become B2B volume pricing (Salesforce Trailhead).
Inventory listsYesEach inventory list becomes stock at a Shopify location. Shopify Plus supports up to 200 locations (Shopify Help Center).
Custom attributesYes, remappedProduct, category and customer custom attributes become metafields. Repeated structured data such as size guides or specs becomes metaobjects.
Customers and addressesYesNames, emails, phones, address books, opt in status and custom attributes move. Customer groups become tags, segments or B2B companies.
Customer passwordsNoPasswords are never exported in readable form, so they cannot be carried over. With Shopify new customer accounts, customers sign in with a one time code sent by email instead.
Historical ordersYes, via APIOrders are exported from SFCC and imported through the Shopify API, because Shopify admin CSV import covers products and customers but not orders (Shopify Help Center).
Coupons and promotionsRecreatedCoupon codes move. Promotion logic is rebuilt as Shopify discounts, automatic discounts or discount Functions, see the mapping below.
Content assets and Page Designer pagesRebuiltCopy and images move. Layouts are rebuilt as Shopify pages and theme sections that merchandisers edit without a deployment.
Gift certificatesYes, via APIUnused balances move as Shopify gift cards through the API or a migration app (Shopify Help Center).
SEO metadata and translationsYesPage titles, meta descriptions and localized content move into each product, collection and page, published per market with Shopify Markets.

How SFCC concepts map to Shopify Plus

This is where most Salesforce migrations get hard. B2C Commerce keeps product data in a product (master) catalog that is not assigned to a site, and builds navigation in a storefront catalog; each site has one storefront catalog, and one catalog can serve several sites (Salesforce Trailhead). Products are modeled as masters, variation groups and variants (Salesforce developer docs), plus product sets, bundles and options (Salesforce Trailhead). Shopify has one product with up to three options and 2,048 variants (Shopify Help Center). We plan the mapping catalog by catalog:

SFCC conceptShopify Plus equivalentHow we handle it
Master (product) catalogProductsThe single source of product records. Products not assigned to any storefront catalog are reviewed before import, since many are retired.
Storefront catalogCollections and menusCategories become collections, and each site’s category tree becomes that market’s navigation.
Master product and variantsProduct with options and variantsThe master becomes one product and each variant keeps its SKU, price, stock and images. Masters with more than three variation attributes are restructured with metafields or split.
Variation groupsVariant filters or separate productsA group such as all blue variants usually becomes a color option. Where groups were landing pages of their own, they become linked products or filtered collection pages.
Product setsCollections or shop the look sectionsSets group related products that shoppers can still buy separately, so they become small collections or a shop the look section on the product page.
Product bundlesBundlesBundles are sold as one unit with their own price. They are rebuilt with a bundles app, which Shopify requires for bundles (Shopify Help Center).
Product optionsLine item properties or an options appPaid add ons such as engraving or warranties are rebuilt as line item properties with a product options app that adds the price.
Price booksPrices, markets and B2B catalogsPrice books hold prices per currency and can include volume price tables (Salesforce Trailhead). They split into variant prices, market prices and B2B catalogs.
Inventory listsLocationsB2C Commerce assigns inventory lists to sites, managed under Products and Catalogs, Inventory (Salesforce developer docs). Each list becomes a Shopify location or a set of locations.
Campaigns, promotions and qualifiersDiscounts and FunctionsPromotions are grouped into campaigns and qualified by coupons, customer groups or source codes (Salesforce Trailhead). Product, order and shipping promotions become discounts, and complex stacking rules become discount Functions.
Customer groupsCustomer segments and tagsStatic and rule based groups become tags and segments for discounts, content and email, or B2B companies for wholesale buyers.
Content assets, slots and Page DesignerTheme sections and metaobjectsPage Designer pages and components are stored as content assets in the content library (Salesforce Trailhead). They are rebuilt as sections and blocks in the theme editor.

Cartridges and integrations: what we rebuild

Code does not move between the two platforms. A B2C Commerce storefront is a cartridge path: SFRA layers plugin, LINK and custom cartridges over the base cartridge (Salesforce Trailhead). We list every cartridge, record the job it does and rebuild only what you still need:

SFCC pieceWhat it doesHow we rebuild it on Shopify Plus
Base cartridge and custom storefront code (SFRA or SiteGenesis)Templates, controllers, client JavaScript and styles for every page.A Shopify theme with sections and blocks your team edits in the theme editor.
LINK cartridgesPartner integrations for payments, tax, reviews, search, ratings, email and fraud.Replaced by the same vendor’s Shopify app where one exists, or by an equivalent app.
Custom cartridges and hooksYour own pricing, shipping, validation and checkout logic.Rebuilt as a custom app, Shopify Flow or Shopify Functions. Custom apps that use Functions require Shopify Plus.
Checkout customizationsCheckout steps and logic in storefront code.Checkout Extensibility: checkout UI extensions, branding and Functions. Customizing the information, shipping and payment steps is a Shopify Plus feature (Shopify Help Center).
OCAPI and B2C Commerce API (SCAPI) integrationsERP, PIM, OMS, CRM and marketing systems reading and writing SFCC data.Reconnected to the GraphQL Admin API and webhooks, through an existing connector app or middleware (Salesforce developer docs).
Jobs and feed importsScheduled catalog, price, stock and order feeds in Business Manager.Rebuilt as connector syncs, bulk API operations or Shopify Flow, and tested with real orders before launch.
Composable Storefront (PWA Kit on Managed Runtime)A React storefront hosted on Managed Runtime and built on the B2C Commerce API (Salesforce developer docs).A Shopify theme, or a headless Hydrogen storefront on Oxygen. Shopify Plus includes up to 25 Hydrogen storefronts (Shopify Help Center).
Hosting, CDN and replicationSandboxes, staging and data replication to production. Not needed. Hosting, CDN and scaling are part of Shopify, and theme changes publish from the editor.

Several sites, locales and currencies on Shopify Plus

Many SFCC realms run one site per brand, country or region, each with its own storefront catalog, locales, price books and inventory lists. On Shopify Plus most of that becomes Shopify Markets in one store, and the rest becomes expansion stores. Shopify Plus includes 9 expansion stores (Shopify Help Center).

Adding B2B when you leave Salesforce Commerce Cloud

Salesforce B2B Commerce runs on the Salesforce platform in Lightning Experience (Salesforce developer docs), separate from B2C Commerce. Many SFCC brands sell wholesale through a second system or by hand. Shopify Plus runs B2B and DTC in one store:

Negotiated price listsB2B catalogsShopify Plus allows unlimited catalogs assigned directly to companies and locations; other plans allow 3 active catalogs (Shopify Help Center).

How we keep your SEO when moving from SFCC to Shopify Plus

Shopify uses fixed URL prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), so every SFCC URL changes. B2C Commerce builds SEO URLs from URL rules, with product URLs that often carry the category path and end in the product ID and .html, such as /shoes/sandals/red/water-sandal/12414.html (Salesforce Trailhead). Redirects live in Business Manager under Merchant Tools, SEO, URL Rules Redirects, with a quota of 25,000 URL redirects per site (Salesforce Trailhead). Our SEO checklist:

  • A full URL inventory. We export URL rules, static and dynamic redirect mappings and locale mappings for every site, crawl the storefront and pull indexed and linked URLs from Search Console.
  • A one to one redirect map. Every product, category, content page, search refinement page and existing redirect gets a 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent. Dynamic mappings are expanded into individual URLs. No mass redirects to the homepage.
  • Metadata and content kept. Page titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text and copy move unchanged.
  • Sitemap resubmitted. Shopify generates /sitemap.xml automatically (Shopify Help Center). We submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools on launch day.
  • Post launch checks. We test old URLs on the live domain and watch Search Console for 404s, fixing any gaps.

Typical SFCC URL patterns and where they go:

SFCC URLShopify URLNotes
/shoes/sandals/red/water-sandal/12414.html/products/water-sandalSEO product URL with category path and product ID. Every path variation redirects to the one product URL.
/water-sandal/12414.html/products/water-sandalProduct URL without the category path. Mapped by product ID.
/men/collections/menCategory URL from the storefront catalog. Nested categories map to their own collections.
/men/shoes/red//collections/mens-shoesSEO search refinement URL. Mapped to the matching collection, or a dedicated collection where the page ranks.
/on/demandware.store/Sites-Brand-Site/en_US/Product-Show?pid=12414/products/water-sandalController URL with a query string. Tested after launch, see the note below.
/fr/chaussures/sandale/12414.html/fr/products/water-sandalLocale path or country domain. Maps to the matching Shopify market subfolder or domain.
/s/Brand/menNot redirectedSandbox and staging host paths should never be indexed. If they are, we flag them for removal rather than redirect them.

Shopify URL redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page, so they fire once the old SFCC address returns a 404 on Shopify. Stores can hold up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus, far beyond the 25,000 per site quota on SFCC. URLs with query strings might not redirect as expected (Shopify Help Center), so we test them after launch.

How long does a Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus migration take?

Data transfer is the quick part. Most of the time goes into mapping, rebuilding cartridges, integrations, design and testing. Typical ranges by project type:

Project typeTypical scopeTypical timeline
Single siteOne brand and locale, a theme build, ERP or OMS connection12 to 20 weeks
Multi site or internationalSeveral sites, locales or currencies, PIM and ERP, custom checkout logic16 to 28 weeks
Headless, or B2B and DTCComposable Storefront rebuild or Hydrogen, wholesale accounts, several integrations20 to 36 weeks

Typical ranges for planning only, not a quote or a guarantee. Your audit sets the actual schedule, and phased launches by site or region are common.

What affects the cost of a Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus migration?

We do not publish fixed prices, because no two SFCC realms need the same work. A free audit gives you a fixed quote. These factors move it:

FactorWhy it matters
Number of sites and localesEach site or locale adds markets or expansion stores, translations, pricing and redirects.
Variation modelMasters with many variation attributes, variation groups, sets, bundles and options need restructuring.
Cartridge pathEach LINK or custom cartridge you still need becomes a Shopify feature, an app, a custom app or a Function.
Integrations and jobsERP, PIM, OMS, CRM and marketing connections and scheduled feeds each need setup and end to end testing.
PromotionsComplex campaigns, stacking rules and qualifiers take mapping and testing as discounts and Functions.
Storefront approachA Liquid theme, an adapted theme and a headless Hydrogen build differ in effort.
B2B requirementsCompanies, catalogs, payment terms and approvals take mapping and testing.
Order history and content volumeYears of orders and large content libraries take longer to extract, import and verify.

Salesforce Commerce Cloud vs Shopify Plus: what changes after you migrate

SFCC gives you an enterprise platform with storefront code your team owns. On Shopify Plus the platform does more of the work and your merchandisers do more without developers.

Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus migration FAQ

Can I migrate from Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes, if every indexed SFCC URL gets a 301 redirect to its new Shopify URL and your metadata and content stay the same. We build the redirect map from your URL rules, static and dynamic redirect mappings and a full crawl. Shopify Plus holds up to 20,000,000 redirects (Shopify Help Center).

What happens to our SFRA, SiteGenesis and LINK cartridges?

Cartridge code does not move, but what it does can. We list every cartridge on your cartridge path (Salesforce Trailhead) and rebuild what you still need as theme code, an app, a custom app or Shopify Functions. Many LINK partners also offer a Shopify app.

How do SFCC master products and variants become Shopify variants?

Each master product becomes one Shopify product and each variant keeps its SKU, price, stock and images. Shopify allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product (Shopify Help Center), so masters with more variation attributes are restructured with metafields or split.

How do price books and inventory lists move to Shopify?

List and sale price books become compare at price and price, currency price books become market prices, and volume price tables become B2B volume pricing (Salesforce Trailhead). Each inventory list becomes stock at a Shopify location, with up to 200 locations on Shopify Plus (Shopify Help Center).

We run several SFCC sites. Do we need several Shopify stores?

Not always. Sites that differ only by country, language or currency usually become markets in one store with Shopify Markets. Sites for separate brands or operations become expansion stores, and Shopify Plus includes 9 of them (Shopify Help Center).

What happens to our SFCC promotions and coupons?

Coupon codes move, and promotion logic is rebuilt. SFCC groups promotions into campaigns qualified by coupons, customer groups or source codes (Salesforce Trailhead). These become Shopify discounts, automatic discounts and customer segments, with discount Functions for complex stacking rules.

Can we keep our order history and customer accounts?

Yes. Customers, addresses and historical orders move, with orders imported through the API after products and customers (Shopify Help Center). Passwords cannot be carried over, so customers sign in with a one time email code through Shopify new customer accounts (Shopify Help Center).

We use Composable Storefront. Do we have to go headless on Shopify?

No. Many brands move from PWA Kit to a Shopify theme to cut front end maintenance. If headless still fits, Shopify Plus includes up to 25 Hydrogen storefronts deployed on Oxygen (Shopify Help Center).

Can Shopify Plus handle B2B as well as our DTC store?

Yes. Shopify B2B adds companies, locations, catalogs, volume pricing, quantity rules and payment terms to the same store, and Shopify Plus allows unlimited catalogs assigned directly to companies (Shopify Help Center). Quotes and approvals usually need draft orders, Flow or an app.

How do you avoid downtime at cutover?

SFCC stays live through the build and test migration. At cutover we run a delta migration of orders, customers and stock changed since the test run, then switch the domain and activate redirects, keeping the switch window short.
